Happy Valentines Day Nerds! I hope your day is filled with love, candy and flowers from your loved ones. I’m more excited for the half off Valentine’s Day candy so don’t buy all of it please! Today is a special WCW. In honor of “Black Panther” coming out tomorrow, today I will highlight a Queen in her own right, the former Queen of Wakanda: Storm.
Born Ororo Munroe to a tribal princess of Kenya and an American photojournalist father, Storm is raised in Harlem and Cairo. She was made an orphan after her parents were killed in the midst of an Arab–Israeli conflict. An incident at this time also traumatized Munroe, leaving her with the condition known as claustrophobia that she would struggle with for life. Storm is a member of the X-Men, a group of mutant heroes fighting for peace and equal rights between mutants and humans. Under the tutelage of a master thief an adolescent Munroe became a skilled pickpocket, the means of which she meets through coincidence the powerful mutant Professor X. Professor X later convinces Munroe to join the X-Men and use her abilities for a greater cause and purpose. Possessing natural leadership skills and formidable powers of her own, Storm has led the X-Men at times and has been a member of teams such as the Avengers and the Fantastic Four as well. (Source)
You’ve seen her played by the likes of Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp in movies. But what makes Storm so special is her strength. Not often in comics have you seen her weak or not able to hold her own. She’s heir to the oldest royal family in history , one of the strongest mutants in history (even though she hasn’t reached her full potential) and she never has a bad hair day. And to top off her accomplishments, she married her childhood friend T’Challa and they became the superhero couple to end all superhero couples. The Goddess of Weather married the Panther God, you can’t get more Lit than that. They were married for 6 years before T’Challa had the marriage annulled (look up Avengers Vs. X-men comics) but they still have love for each other.
This doesn’t take away from the fact that Storm is still one of the most important women in comics. She has led the X-men many times and is always looked at as a leader. Even when she had relinquished her command of the X-men, she was still seen as the leader of the team. Storm is highly respected, loved and unforgettable. Let us appreciate Storm in all her glory and hope her and Black Panther reconcile their marriage. Until next time, Nerd Out!
Storm is such an appropriate choice given this time. She’s the first black superhero I’ve ever seen all because of the 90s X-Men cartoon. I liked how they made her a character that people can actually take seriously and good on you for bringing up the times where she got to be the leader.
