Anime Spotlight: In Another World with my Smartphone

I stumbled across this anime completely by accident. I was searching through Hulu’s new format on my PS4 (Don’t totally like it just yet), and since Hulu remembers that I enjoy anime, suggested a few.  This one in particular was at the top of the list. I’m assuming because it literally was 4 episodes in at that time so it was the “newest” on the list. Here is the plot summary from Anime News Network:

“Touya Mochizuki is the unfortunate victim of a bolt of lightning thrown carelessly by God. Because he really wasn’t supposed to die at fifteen, God is willing to cut him a deal – Touya can be reborn, or rather, re-placed, at his present age in a new world in order to continue living. To sweeten things, the world will have magic, which Touya will be able to use, his physical abilities will get a boost, and he can bring any one thing with him. Touya opts to take his smartphone, which God kindly equips with the appropriate maps and translation functions for his new life. And that life looks like it’s going to go pretty well – within moments of awakening, Touya has been paid for his other-world clothes, formed a party with twins Elze and Linze, learned he can use all seven forms of magic, and introduced his new world to ice cream – and this is only the first day”

After watching the first few episodes, I’m intrigued. I don’t think this is one of anime series that becomes an instant classic but it does have enough to take up some of your time. Be mindful, because of the partial nudity it sometimes has, I would NOT suggest you watch this with your kids as a way to get them to start watching anime. I’m on episode 6 now and there is a little story developing while the main character essentially stays overpowered (considering the world he’s in) throughout which isn’t a bad thing. If you want a reference anime, think of Tenchi Muyo with younger characters. This anime is essentially classified as a harem anime but with underage boys and girls (why is underage characters in adult situations still a thing!?)

Overall, I give this anime a 6/10 until I watch more episodes and see how things go. Like I said before, my interest is piqued so I’ll continue watching for the time being. New episodes come out every Tuesday on Hulu, but I’m not sure if it comes on Crunchyroll yet since I discovered it on Hulu. What new anime shows are you watching this fall? Have any I should check out? Leave some suggestions in the comments! Until next, Nerd Out!

I don’t know what your PG-13 specs are, but Trigun and Silver Spoon are amazeballs anime binge-watch choices. Tribune is Firefly Dr. Who without socjus stupid, and Silver Spoon is slice-of-life Japanese Ag school, ditto.
