30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 3

Day 3: A game that is underrated.

Welcome back Blerders and Nerders! You see today’s subject and the game I chose is MS Saga: A New Dawn. Have you heard of it? I highly doubt most of you have, which is why I chose this one as a underrated game. MS Saga wasn’t a widely popular game when it came out. The Gundam series had just started gaining some traction in the US (I believe the first season of Gundam 00 was out by this time) but it wasn’t well known game. I randomly found it at Hollywood Video and decided to rent it. It was in the bargain bin and I liked Gundam so I was willing to try it and I took a shot. Boy was I surprised. Here is an excerpt of the plot of this game:
“At the peak of society, humanity created a complex machine system the Glory System (Known by all as the G System), an amazing technology which could create any machine so long as there were plans for it. However, tragedy struck soon after and an apocalypse gripped Earth. Humanity began to rebuild society as best they could and called the apocalypse the “Great Fall”. A young boy named Tristan (Trush in the original Japanese version) lives happily at an orphanage with his best friend, Fritz. But the happiness is ended when mysterious new weapons known as Mobile suits lay siege on the orphanage and kill its occupants. Seeking revenge and answers, Tristan sets out to find out why his home was attacked.”

Essentially this is a Gundam RPG that feels like your watching a whole season of the show. The focus is the customization of the mobile suits. The designs of the suits were mainly from the early Universal Century, G Gundam, and Gundam Wing.

I just couldn’t decide on the shoes….

You would gather parts by fighting and winning battles against other mobile suits. Some of the parts affected your fighting skills but for the most part it was for cosmetics. I mean who wouldn’t like building their own Gundam however they wanted? (Gundam Breaker much?) The story was easy to follow and enjoyable. The characters were interesting as well, which really spoke to it being a RPG along with the turn based battle system.

Talking about this game really makes me want to go look for it. Now it’s considered a classic and is very hard to find these days. I’ve seen it on Amazon for hundreds of dollars I’m not going to pay. See what happens when you under-appreciate some games? Is there a game you think is under rated? A sleeping classic if you will. Tell me about it in the comments! I swear I will get better at these as the days go by so bare with me. Until next time, Nerd out!

I would of gotten away with it too…

  1. I never heard of this game, but it looks cool. Some underrated games in my opinion would be…

    -Project Justice/Rival Schools 2
-Evolution: The World of Sacred Device
    -Jet Grind Radio
    -Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
    -Power Stone series

    1. I’ve played most of the series you listed but never played Power Stone series at all. I would be interested to try it out though. But this game is really obscure among the series of Gundam games and not very well known. Which is wierd that now it fetches such a high resale price. If you are able to find a cheap copy and have some time on your hands, I say check it out!

      1. Very nice! I don’t know that many people who played anything in the Rival Schools series. It’s also cool how there is a post-punk band named after the game. Power Stone was such a fun and criminally underrated fighting game where characters can gather the power stones and get super powers temporarily. The 2nd game had 4 player support and some multi leveled arenas that would put Smash Bros. to shame. That’s good to know about that Gundam game. Must be quite a hidden treasure there. Out of curiosity, have you played any of the Super Robot War games?

        1. I’ve heard of them but have not had the pleasure of playing them. At some point I want to be able to stream or play and review games I have’t played before.
